Whenever you visit a medical provider for a service, be it a consultation, a diagnostic test, laboratory tests, or retrieval of medicines, a request is submitted to your insurer. These requests are referred to as, “claims.” Once submitted, the insurer reviews the claim against your policy terms and, if approved, settles the cost either directly with the service provider or by reimbursing you.
Most medical insurance plans have a cost-sharing structure, which means you may be required to contribute a portion of your treatment’s cost, even if you are insured. This typically comes in the two following forms:
Deductible — a fixed amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in. For example, if your deductible is AED 100 per visit, you pay that amount and your insurer covers the rest.
Co-insurance — a percentage of the treatment cost that you share with your insurer. For example, if your co-insurance is 20%, your insurer covers 80% of the bill and you pay the remaining 20%.
Upon the confirmation of your plan, these details are shared within the Table of Benefits shared with you by your broker, as well as your insurer.
These are the two ways your medical insurance claim can be settled:
Direct Billing — Your insurer has a network of approved hospitals and clinics that they work with. When you visit a medical provider within this network list, your treatment costs are settled directly between the provider and your insurer — meaning you pay little to nothing out of pocket at the point of care. Simply present your insurance card or Emirates ID, and you’re covered.
Reimbursement — If you visit a provider outside your network, or in a situation where direct billing is not available, you pay for the treatment upfront and submit your receipts, medical reports, and claim form to your insurer afterwards. Once approved, your insurer repays you the covered amount directly. This may also apply to medical care outside the UAE, all of which is detailed in your Table of Benefits.
Upon finalizing your medical insurance, our operations team will send you this Network List, along with other relevant documents such as the Table of Benefits, Proof of Payment etc.
